School Committee Approves $579,000 Restroom Project

Taunton School Committee OKs $579,000 softball restroom and $176,000 paving contract amid a fight over subcommittee authority. The committee, chaired by Mayor Shawna O'Connell, unanimously awarded the restroom job to Heimlich Landscaping and Construction, the paving work to Hyde Paving, and $36,500 to Habib and Associates to review building codes at the Carol A. Doherty Professional Learning Center.
Superintendent Cabral reported the Taunton Cable Commission approved $800,000 to wire the district's new Hamilton Street site, saying "we're really excited about this contribution." STEM Director Dr. Elizabeth Pawlowski detailed eight years of science and math gains, including full K-12 rollout of Open Sci-Ed. Member Mrs.
Schatz said colleagues twice rejected her proposed meeting format for the Special Program Subcommittee, arguing "we should have the professional courtesy to allow" two-against-one scheduling decisions. The Finance and Law Subcommittee also cleared $754,471.89 in fiscal 2027 bills payable.
